Where do I start?

Can anyone give me a starting point to work out which battalion's/divisions my grandfather would have been in. He enlisted in Dec 1915 into the Notts & Derby Regiment of the Sherwood Forester's. ( regimental No. 43396)

He was then in Royal Irish Rifles (no. 43040) and then the Machine Gun Corps (no. 148321)

He was a Lewis Gunner. He was wounded in France in Nov 1918 and was discharged May 1919.

I would like to know, so that I can put together and find out more about where he fought and what it would have been like.

Thanks for any help

Jean

Hello Jean;

I'll set some enquiries going as to the MGC side, with the expert in our team (a group of us writing a history of the MGC) who knows numbering systems etc. and see if he has any further details on him.

He won't have been a Lewis Gunner in the MGC; they used the Vickers machine gun.

You'll find much useful information on 'how to start' on the main site for this group, "The Long, Long Trail" at:

http://www.1914-1918.net/ and go to 'Grandad's War'.

A quick response - but hope we can go forward from there.
