Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 17 October , 2022 Share Posted 17 October , 2022 (edited) Dear All, S. B. Hauser was clearly a Major, IARO, and was also a QM of Arab and Kurdish Levies, Iraq. 1) I have found his promotions from 2Lt to Capt., in the Lond. Gaz., but NOT, try as I might, NOT to Major (Acting or Temporary)! 2) He was apparently a QM, Arab and Kurdish Levies, Iraq (on his marriage cert.). However, I have been unable to find this appointment, either. Perhaps the latter is an entry circa 1924 under the Colonial Office? Help required, please! Kindest regards, Kim. tankengine888 Posted 17 October , 2022 Share Posted 17 October , 2022 (edited) Hello Kim! I understand that he was a Captain on June 21st, 1923. I see that the record you have dates his promotion to Major in 1920. Perhaps he was reduced in rank? That marriage record from 1921 states his rank as Captain aswell. I took a look at the marriage photo sent in the original post which shows three pips which no doubt confirms he wasn't a Major when he married If he wasn't a Major, then I wonder why he has it on the medal... maybe perhaps he was Acting/Temporary Major? maybe he was never a Major? Anyways, that's my attempt on it. Tank. Edited 17 October , 2022 by tankengine888
Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 17 October , 2022 Author Share Posted 17 October , 2022 Dear Zidane and Alan, Many thanks for going to the trouble of searching for Things Hauser! Major is also on his Medal Index Card (which I should have previously attached), and GSM Roll, which points to an Acting or Temporary rank held for a certain time (probably in a War Zone). Someone had found out that he was a QM with Iraq Levies (which was under the Colonial Office - List?) 1919-ca. 1923. Unfortunately detailed information about individual Officers concerned with his Arab & Kurdish Levies: Iraq (which probably puts him in the North of the vast country). Of course Hauser has researched well - better than most, in fact - but one always likes to find out more! Thanks for helping, much appreciated. Kindest regards, Kim. Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 17 October , 2022 Author Share Posted 17 October , 2022 Dear Alan, Ah! Good searching and well done - a Temporary Major from 12 Apr 1919, then. Many thanks for that, which has solved my question in true GWF form! What a pity he does not show in the Colonial Office List of 1920-21! (I was - years ago - beamed a 1926 Iraq Levies List as an example.) I also found an interesting Dec 1919 Indian Army List which features our elusive Asst Political Officer. Such British Officers feature in the excellent "Enemy on the Euphrates: The Battle for Iraq 1914-1921" by Ian Rutledge (Saqi Books, 2014), as APOs and POs, many of whom lost their lives in the course of their work. Indeed, Hauser is juxtaposed with a Capt Bond, who was murdered... Kindest regards, Kim.
