Remembered Today:

6 York and Lancaster Jan-Jun 1916

Does anyone have any detailed information of the battalion during this period.

They had returned from Gallipoli and were stationed in Egypt, primarily digging trenches and guarding the Suez Canal, including at El Ferdan. They camped at Sidi Bishr on June 27, before sailing from Alexandria for France on the hired vessel Oriana. This detail comes from small battalion publication held at the Regimental Museum, Rotherham. But there is no more than that and obviously the War Diary for Jan-Jun 1916 has not been digitised.

Thanks in anticipation.

I’m sure you have seen their war diary for that period exists at Kew? That in itself is lucky as quite a few units did not have war diary for periods when in Egypt.

No doubt a proportion/majority of that 6 month period was spent in recovery as they rested and were reinforced after Gallipoli. Like all infantry battalions they were pretty done in after Gallipoli.

Might be worth calling the museum to see if they have war diaries for sale? I’m sure you’ve done that already from your post.   If not your only and best avenue is a visit to Kew id say.
