Major J. Roxburgh - WW1 Memorial at Ladybrand, South Africa

Can anybody identify this chap Major J.Roxburgh on the WW1 Memorial in Ladybrand, South Africa please.

I'm trying to rule in or rule out Major John Hewitt Roxburgh MC MGC CWGC

Given the lack of initials (others have multiple ) and no MC I’d disregard unless you have some link to him or family living in that part of South Africa.

I did notice that this fmp record includes a chap whose medals I have - he was in an English regiment and had family in SA

I agree Coldstreamer, there is no link as far as I can see to South Africa, no passenger records, and if you look at the age of Major J.H. he was only 23 when he died in 1918, he would have just 3 years max in S.A between OTC at Clifton College to being appointed as 2/Lt in the 17/KLR on 01st September 1914.

There is certainly a lack of candidates to be Ladybrand Major J., perhaps a non-comm ? CWGC offers up Capt John Roxburgh Royal Scots.

The other officers on the memorial could be:-

Capt G.J.Miller SA Infantry

Lt A.W.L.Mardon Cape Corps

Lt Mattew Sharp MC London Regt
