gnr.ktrha Posted 12 September , 2022 Share Posted 12 September , 2022 Hello, A friend has an 1897 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword, Edward 7th, which was supplied by "G Downie, 48 Clayton Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne." I was wondering if anyone had come across this retailer before and knew anything about the company. Were they a military outfitter and is it known who supplied them with their swords? Many thanks for looking.
gnr.ktrha Posted 19 September , 2022 Author Share Posted 19 September , 2022 I've found a little bit of information on Ancestry about the family, it seems that the Son's carried on the business after the father passed away. Also there are examples of one sword and a Northumberland Fusilier's headdress for sale online- https://www.michaeldlong.com/product/northumberland-fusiliers-victorian-officers-sword/https://www.ukauctioneers.com/auction_catalogue.cfm?A-LATE-VICTORIAN-COON-SKIN-CAP-BELONGING-TO-LIEUTENANT-COLONEL-J-R-HEDLEY-3RD-V-B-N-F-FORMER-CO-TO-HORACE-POWELL-COTTON-WITH-GOLD-TOOLED-RED-LEATHER-LABEL&itemID=20E9CB0FD7D62CF4D7E1FECEFF580EE9E72CAFC3&lotID=25E8CE07D5D227&auction=21EAC20ED1&action=8&rangepage=9¤tpage=1&showLots=50&sortBy=lotsort&lotView=list&imagesOnly=N It seems that they were at 49 during the Victorian Period. Is it possible to identify swords from the Proved mark on the blade? Does anyone have any advice about how to identify the sword maker?
