NICKBACON Posted 10 September , 2022 Share Posted 10 September , 2022 Hi all, My great grandfather was Lieutenant DH Bacon from Royal Flying Corps 60th Squadron. https://livesofthefirstworldwar.iwm.org.uk/lifestory/117656 I have had his medal for many years and thought I would share a couple of photos of it. hmsk212 Posted 10 September , 2022 Share Posted 10 September , 2022 (edited) Hi Nick Welcome to the Forum. The medal is the British War Medal, he was awarded this plus the Victory Medal for his WW1 Service. The Ribbon on the medal is that of the Victory Medal. In addition to his medals his family would have been given a Memorial Plaque & Scroll. He was killed on 16th November 1916 by the German Ace Ltn Hans von Keudell. Your great grandfather, Lt Douglas Haviland Bacon, was the 8th of von Keudells 12 Victories. Steve Edited 10 September , 2022 by hmsk212

Nick - Welcome to GWF Thank you for posting the photos of his BWM Have no idea on your knowledge but I think probably posting a bit more info probably can't really do any harm: Lt. Douglas Haviland BACON His Officer's Service Papers are at The National Archive - unfortunately not digitised so a visit by you or a researcher required https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C1063800 The RAF Museum StoryVault have his Casualty card - it appears he was flying a Nieuport Scout when he met his death http://www.rafmuseumstoryvault.org.uk/archive/bacon-d.h.-douglas-haviland and they also have a Roll of Honour entry too http://www.rafmuseumstoryvault.org.uk/archive/7000291022-bacon-d.h.-douglas-haviland M
Airshipped Posted 11 September , 2022 Share Posted 11 September , 2022 Scott's history of the squadron contains some general information on the aerial combats of November 1916, but you can search the text electronically for keywords, e.g. Bell-Irving was wounded that November. https://archive.org/details/sixtysquadronraf00scot/page/24/mode/2up Annette Carson regularly posts on this forum. I don't have to hand her excellent biography of D'Urban Armstrong but recall that he was with 60 Squadron a little later in the war than your great grandfather. That said, I believe that she obtained a huge volume of information on the squadron's operations and so might well have encountered a reference to your great grandfather in the casualty returns or pilots' memoirs, letters home etc.
