Bedfordshire Llama Cavalry

Not a new cavalry unit! A Sgt of the Bedfordshire Regiment rides a Llama at Wingfield Zoo, Ampthill 1916. Sir Anthony Wingfield (1857-1952) established his private zoo in the grounds of Ampthill House. After he died the animals were transferred to Whipsnade Zoo. The house was demolished and the grounds were developed for housing. Lord Amptill developed a military training establishment for the Bedfordshire Regiment at Ampthill and this NCO was probably from there.
