LChapman Posted 26 August , 2022 Share Posted 26 August , 2022 Hi, I'm looking at this medical record on FindMyPast. The third column along in the photo is for 'Squadron, Battery or Company' - what do people think it says for H Simpson (4th name down). Thanks. Acknown Posted 26 August , 2022 Share Posted 26 August , 2022 (edited) Are you sure it doesn't say 'H. Sanson' (Harry)? He served in the 8th Y&L Regt. KIA 07 Jun 17. Acknown Edited 26 August , 2022 by Acknown

Acknown Definitely my Herbert Simpson, the service number matches and he's listed as being in the 9th Cheshires.
TEW Posted 26 August , 2022 Share Posted 26 August , 2022 Could it be HQ? If so the diary is likely to mention HQ being shelled. TEW
Acknown Posted 26 August , 2022 Share Posted 26 August , 2022 Ok, my bad, I read his number as 32564 (well, look at it!). I agree with 112, but H2 and HQ are possibilities. Acknown

TEW I have just looked up examples of a cursive Q and it does actually say it usually looks a lot like a 2. The diary does indeed mention a 'barrage on the rear areas' which would have probably included company HQ?

Acknown Posted 26 August , 2022 Share Posted 26 August , 2022 You may be well aware of this, but employment in Bn HQ was varied. LLT has a piece: https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/army/definitions-of-units/what-was-a-battalion-of-infantry/. Acknown
