Guest Posted 15 August , 2022 Posted 15 August , 2022 Hi I am new to this forum, I have recently come into the possession of my Grandfather's war diary from 1914 to 1916. He was in the Royal garrison artillery 32nd company and then in the 110th heavy battery. Wondering if any one has any information on any other diaries that I could use to cross reference with, I have found an intelligence diary in the national archives. Thank you in advance David
ianjonesncl Posted 15 August , 2022 Posted 15 August , 2022 32 Company RGA were stationed at Sandown on the Isle of Wight in August 1914. 110 Heavy Battery was formed at Woolwich 25th August 1914 and deployed to the Western Front on 20th September. WO95-549 Allocation Units shows the higher formations and unis to which the Battery was attached. Initially the Battery were part of the Divisional Artillery of 7th (Meeut) Dvision. Information on the Division can be found on the Long Long Trail 7th (Meerut) Division - The Long, Long Trail (longlongtrail.co.uk) They were then transferred to the 2nd Division, though I can see no reference to the Battery on the Long Long Trail. 2nd Division - The Long, Long Trail (longlongtrail.co.uk) The Heavy Batteries were withdrawn from the Divisional Artillery Groups and were formed into Heavy Artillery Groups (which would be later termed Brigades Garrison Artillery). The war diaries of the HAGs / Brigades to which 110 HB were attached can be found on the National Archives by searching for XXX Brigade Royal Garrison Artillery.
charlie962 Posted 15 August , 2022 Posted 15 August , 2022 The Ogilby Muster has copies of the 1914/1915 War Diary for the Battery itself, including some useful location maps. here is a link: https://www.theogilbymuster.com/search/results#/?query="110th heavy"&page=1&type=flex&sort=Regimental_Collection asc&filterBy=Regimental_Collection,"Royal Artillery Museum"&spellCheck=true&recordView=4021997 and an extract, courtesy Royal Artillery Museum, of the first page. Did your GF go to France with them on that date? I hope you will share some of your Diary extracts. Charlie
