Private Joseph Ting - 40505,   D Coy.  1st Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers was admitted to No.34 Casualty Clearing Station 7/12/1916 suffering from GSW to his left leg. knee and thigh, and left via 5 Ambulance Train on 13/12/1916.   He is recorded as having served for 6 months; 3 months in the field.   Apart from the medical record, I can find no further records for this man.

Whilst looking at near numbers I found there are other men from the same number block who have medical records showing overseas service, but who also have no MIC or medal rolls.

40495. J. Samuel. - No.2 Gen. Hosp.  19/12/1916. (3 Months overseas).  Myalgia.

40510. W.H. Ward. - No.34 C.C.S.  2/21917.   H. Coy.  GSW. Head. -  The admission book records he died 5/2/1917.  I can find no casualty records to support this.

40511. F.A. Welch. -  No. 34 C.C.S.  11/12/1916.   A.Coy.   (1 Month overseas). Skull fracture/Shell wound R. arm.

Any further information regarding Pte. Ting would be greatly appreciated.

CWGC record for Rifleman 473486 William Henry Ward, 1/12th Battalion, London Regiment, died 5th February 1917, shows him attached Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/31886/william-henry-ward/

He is buried at Grove Town Cemetery, Meaulte.  CWGC webpage for that cemetery shows "In September 1916, the 34th and 2/2nd London Casualty Clearing Stations were established at this point, known to the troops as Grove Town, to deal with casualties from the Somme battlefields. They were moved in April 1917 and, except for a few burials in August and September 1918, the cemetery was closed. If the same scenario applies then:-

Private 40505 J. Ting could be Private James Ting 473480 - Joseph could be an error in the Medical admission register.
Private 40495 J. Samuel I suspect does have a MiC as Joseph Charles SamuelS, who was 473470 London Regiment, 40495 Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and 21254 Royal Irish Regiment.

Private 40511 F.A. Welch could be Private 473487 Frederick A. Welch, subsequently 234956 Labour Corps.

The number range block allocated to the 12th Battalions of the London Regiment for the 1917 TFrenumbering ran from 470001 to 490000. https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/soldiers/a-soldiers-life-1914-1918/renumbering-of-the-territorial-force-in-1917/renumbering-the-tf-infantry-in-1917/

FMP says it has service records for James Tring under his London Regiment number – however from the way it is indexed could be one of their one pager piece of scrap paper found in another mans’ records. (Sorry, don’t subscribe so can’t check it out.)

Not spotting anything for Joseph Charles Samuels or Frederick A. Welch on either FMP or Ancestry.

Hope that isn't a red herring,
Peter

Many thanks indeed Peter, nothing fishy with your tip at all.

James Ting has several pages of service records surviving, they show he enlisted 7/6/1916 to  the 3/11th London Regiment - No.5516,  transferred to 1/12 London Reg. on landing in France 3/10/1916 and renumbered - No.7269,  and was attached to 1st Royal Inniskillings 31/10/1916.  He returned to the UK and is shown as "attached" 12th London Depot - 27/12/1916.

His service record does not show his R.I.F. No. 40505.   It does record his GSW - L. leg, knee and thigh on 7/12/1916.

He was back in the UK by the time he was renumbered 473480 and was discharged 19/6/1917.
