Who was higher rank at the start of the GW Petain or Foch

Hi Richard.

The way I understand it Foch was the higher ranking officer at the outbreak of the Great War. 

Philipe Petain was a Colonel leading his Brigade at the Battle of Guisa on the 29th August 1914. The following day he was promoted to Brigadier General. 

Ferdinand Foch was a General de Division in August 1914 leading XX Corps.

I hope I got that right :)
