aengland Posted 25 July , 2022 Posted 25 July , 2022 I'm not very good with uniforms, and I just know that there is at least one person on this wonderful Forum who is! The soldier I am interested in is the one on the right on the attached photograph, in the lighter shade of uniform. The grand-daughter believes that the person is her grandfather but why the different uniform? The name of the soldier is one Albert Edward Denmark and I note from his medal card that he was awarded the General Service Medal possibly for service in Iraq. Would that be an explanation? is it s standard tropical uniform perhaps? I am guessing, and perhaps shouldn't be! Any help would be gratefully received Thank you in advance Andrew
Admin Michelle Young Posted 25 July , 2022 Admin Posted 25 July , 2022 Not the sharpest image, but I’d say the lighter coloured uniform fits a warm climate. Can’t see any shoulder insignia, but I think they may be wearing ball buttons which is suggestive of artillery. @FROGSMILE

Unfortunately the absence of spurs, bandolier and other features makes it impossible to confirm one way or another. The other fellow appears to have a 2-piece shoulder title that suggests either fusiliers or light infantry. Edited 25 July , 2022 by FROGSMILE
aengland Posted 25 July , 2022 Author Posted 25 July , 2022 Thanks you Michelle (great to hear from you), and FROGSMILE His medal card indicates that he served in Iraq (if that is where he got his General Service Medal) with the KOYLI.... so not artillery Am I right with the Iraq interpretation please? Andrew
Admin Michelle Young Posted 25 July , 2022 Admin Posted 25 July , 2022 Looking at the MIC, the AE Denmark who got the Iraq clasp is on the attached image. (Courtesy Ancestry) there’s an AH Denmark in the RGA
Admin Michelle Young Posted 25 July , 2022 Admin Posted 25 July , 2022 If he was KOYLI, and given The comments by @FROGSMILE about the two piece shoulder titles could the other man be her grandfather?
FROGSMILE Posted 25 July , 2022 Posted 25 July , 2022 (edited) The light coloured uniform is khaki drill, as was commonly worn in hot climates like Iraq, which is indeed mentioned on the MIC. The 2-piece title matches for all the light infantry regiments mentioned although by 1916 they were starting to be replaced by one-piece titles. Edited 25 July , 2022 by FROGSMILE
