clk Posted 27 June , 2022 Share Posted 27 June , 2022 Hi John, Unfortunately, it's not that clear, but for his actions on his actions on 23rd July [??] 1918 Image sourced from the National Archives Regards Chris
Ivor Anderson Posted 27 June , 2022 Share Posted 27 June , 2022 (edited) He was with the 2/2nd West Riding Field Ambulance RAMC (as on annotated citation above) when he won the DCM (Ancestry image): He may be mentioned in the 2/2 West Riding FA war diary here: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7355384 Edited 27 June , 2022 by Ivor Anderson
Ivor Anderson Posted 27 June , 2022 Share Posted 27 June , 2022 (edited) The listing of the citation in the LG on 30-10-1918 makes the 23-09-18 an unlikely date for the action. The 23-07-1918 looks more likely. Note the mention of 'Ecueil Farm'. Edited 27 June , 2022 by Ivor Anderson

clk Posted 27 June , 2022 Share Posted 27 June , 2022 (edited) Hi John, 1 hour ago, Ivor Anderson said: The listing of the citation in the LG on 30-10-1918 makes the 23-09-18 an unlikely date for the action. The 23-07-1918 looks more likely. Note the mention of 'Ecueil Farm'. I did think that the handwritten date on the citation might have been in the month of September, but that wouldn't make sense of the date of the Routine Order you posted. I wonder if the war diaries for 62 Division (General Staff), and Commander Royal Artillery, 62 Division may help to firm it up. 55 minutes ago, Ivor Anderson said: Major Gavin Stiell was the officer mentioned in his citation - he got the MC: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/30997/supplement/13169 His annotated MC citation shows: Image sourced from the National Archives Interesting to note that both the DCM and MC citations refer to "Allied" artillery, so I guess maybe not British.
