14 1485 LEE Posted 24 June , 2022 Share Posted 24 June , 2022 Hi all, i think I posted this in the wrong place previously. I recently found out my great, great uncle died in 7ccs merville on 10/8/1916. He was pte14/1485 G. W. Lee, 14th y&l (barnsley pals) We have his death penny and two medals but believe he had a third that was taken to canada by a relative( possibly 80years ago) I don’t think it would be a star as he only served 16 having signed up in oct15. If anyone has any idea how i can find out any more info it would be much appreciated, cheers Gregg
14 1485 LEE Posted 24 June , 2022 Author Share Posted 24 June , 2022 I have found his service record and medal card ect. I dont suppose anyone has any idea how i could find out where he was injured. I don’t believe they would cart him all the way from the somme to merville so im guessing la couture or fosse as they are very near merville and the pals were there when he died. This is what i have worked out so far, cheers gregg
Allan1892 Posted 24 June , 2022 Share Posted 24 June , 2022 On checking the Medal Rolls, there is only an entry for the Victory Medal and the British War Medal - nothing for the 1914 or 1914/15 Star. Unless he was awarded a medal for bravery, the VM and the BWM are the only ones he was awarded. (image courtesy of Ancestry)

14 1485 LEE Posted 24 June , 2022 Author Share Posted 24 June , 2022 Cheers Alan, I’m thinking the third medal must have been for sport or something, my grear uncle remembers witnessing a family member choosing one of the three medals but can’t remember much about the medal itself as it was when he was a boy, he’s now in his 90s
Ivor Anderson Posted 24 June , 2022 Share Posted 24 June , 2022 CWGC https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/539123/g-w-lee/ Another soldier from the 14th Y&L is buried in grave 10 in the same row. Died 2 days before. Perhaps when George was wounded?

Ivor Anderson Posted 24 June , 2022 Share Posted 24 June , 2022 (edited) You are fortunate to have a service record for him: https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=1219&h=1169096&tid=&pid=&queryId=3e8db565da0dd9e1b5f61382bdba473c&usePUB=true&_phsrc=WWn3535&_phstart=successSource He had no 1915 star as he only entered France in April 1916 (none on MIC). However, it is possible if a specific incident happened that day and is recorded.
