Corporal Thomas Gregory Brown - 60759 - 176th Siege Battery RGA, Mentioned in Despatches 1918

Hello All,

i wonder if someone can offer advice please.

A great uncle of mine, Corporal Brown, 60759 of the Royal Garrison Artillery, was mentioned in despatches at the end of May 1918.

I have a great deal of his service record, including 2 photos of him while in service in Italy (thanks to @ororkep for his help with that)

I believe his SB was in Italy by the time he is MiD, but i have been unable to find the war diary for the 176 SB beyond November 1917 (when they went to Italy it says on the war diary cover!)

I have found the gazette supplement that mentions him, but i can find no mention of why he was mentioned.

Does anyone have (or can they point me to) the War Diary for 1918 for 176 SB?

Or does anyone know where i can find out more about why he was mentioned?

I attach various screenshots of the relevant parts of his record, where i have highlighted or underlined each bit.

Any help or a steer in the right direction appreciated!

Thanks

Ed

The War Diaries for the Italian Campaign have not been digitised

176 SB is here:-

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C4557358

I see he attended a signalling school It might be worthwhile reading Plumer's Despatch,(the one for which he was mentioned) to see if he references the artillery/signalling.

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/30626/supplement/4429 the artillery is referenced on p.4431

apart from that the preamble to his mention in the Third Supplement is about the best you are going to get until you can view the diary.

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/30711/supplement/6337

i.e."whose distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty I consider deserving of special mention"

Yes he did, his training records indicate he attained a first class in signalling and telephony.

i will put the war diary on my list and attempt to get to the TNA in the next couple of years - I wonder when it’s going to be digitised - I am happy to play the waiting game, plenty of other research to be getting in with!

thank you for the link to the plumer writings, I shall endeavour to view the war diary and hope it mentions something!

thanks for your assistance
