Hi all newcomer so be forgiving.

Interested in identifying or info on the bayonet I inherited from my grandad.

He was in the Essex regiment First World War.

I hope it’s not too many photos.

thanks in advance.

Bill

Hi Bill,

welcome to the forum. Nice bayonet and scabbard. It’s a 1907 Pattern bayonet made by Sanderson (one of the smaller scale manufacturers) in September 1916.

The X mark shows it has passed a bend test, the /|\ arrow mark shows it as government/military property.

The crown over GR is the Royal cypher for George V;  the smaller crown above number , over E marks are inspectors marks. A very nice keepsake.

Interesting also in that if the one shown was issued to the OP's grandda, there is no pommel marking... Billy the kid, do you know when your grandda joined the regiment?

I assumed he joined up at the start of the war but as the bayonet is dated 1916 that may not be the case.
Just been looking through all the info I have and found a book called “Active Service Testament” and that is dated 23rd of November 1917 and confirms he was in the Essex regiment.
His name was John William Benstead and his service number was 41315 and it seems he was 28 when he joined up according to the previous stated date.

Just been looking on forces-war-records and it seems his service number should be 41351 no records under 41315.
