Hello good sirs,

I found this entrenching tool at my Parents house in France, near Tours. I gave it a bit of a clean up. Can anyone confirm the text?

Is that 1916 or 1915?

No idea of the manufacturer name.

Thanks!

Welcome,

Looks like 1916 to me, possibly the line reads Birmingham…?

SonicJuice,

Welcome to the GWF.

I concur with Dave—-1916 & Birmingham.

Regards,

Following some Googling, I would suggest it might be:

J.YATES&Co

BIRMINGHAM

If we assume the upper line has been poorly stamped and / or obliterated by rust. If it were mine I would remove the rust which might bring out a little more detail.

Thank you very much everyone. I'll try to remove the rust as gently as I can and get back to you with the results!

There are various threads on here regarding rust removal. If you fancy a spot of electrochemistry then electrolysis is the ‘museum standard’ method. Diluted molasses or citric acid also work well.
