Remembered Today:

Looking for W.A. Shearer, Royal Naval Air Service

Hello-

I found this very cool whiskey flask owned by W.A. Shearer of the Royal Naval Air Service, dated 1914. I haven’t been able to find any record of him, and was hoping someone could help!

Interestingly, the piece was later owned by a D.E. Perkins of the RAF ( maybe Shearer gifted it or lost it in a poker game? Haha). Not sure if he what era he owned it in though.

As a first step you could try the Navy Lists. If he was an officer you would expect his name to appear.

There are NavyLists online on the website of the National Library of Scotland, including Monthly Lists, and some confidential editions online at The National Archives, website. I think the latter are  currently still free to download, although before covid you needed to pay.

For details of relevant links and other record sources see the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Royal Navy

Think that rather looks like a post-war seven digit service number of 1251?02 [1251702 or 1251902 ??]

Perhaps his RAF record is still kept by the MoD??
