Trying to trace the recipient of a Royal Navy Silver War Medal

Hi.

I have in my possession, a Silver War Badge with the inscription "For King & Empire - Services Rendered"

It has the number RN44277 on the reverse. I believe it may be my Grandads, Thomas Jones, who served on HMS Canada and took part in the Zeebrugge Raid and also in the Archangel expedition as a Merchant Seaman in 1919.

His Royal Navy no. was J37155 (1915 to 1919) and his Merchant no. was 997482. It tells me on the National Archives page that the list of recipients of badges between the numbers 30581- 45800 are on Ancestry, but despite having full Ancestry access, I can't find out who the badge was issued to... Can anyone assist please?

David John HASTINGS was not an RNVR stoker (no such ratings). He was an RN Special Service stoker and his correct Official No. was SS.117566.

The "RNVR" entry refers to the previous rating on the list: ERA2 Thomas GARLAND Clyde 5/1726 RNVR.

Thomas JONES did not qualify for theSWB, being demobilised post-war.

That is Brilliant, thanks

David John Hastings was my Great Uncle. He introduced his sister to my Grandad as they were good friends onboard Canada... Without that ship, I wouldn't be here ;)

He actually lived to be just shy of 101, outliving my Grandad by almost 50 years

Hi Neil...

Thanks for this... can I ask where you found it? was it on Ancestry? If so, could you post a link?

Thanks

At a similar time to Hastings, Thomas Garland was serving in the Grand Fleet too.

He was aboard HMS Caroline from 11 October 1915 to 3 November 1916

11/10/1915 03/11/1916

as per the transcription on the Jutland Crew List website. (This secondary source is derived from the Statement of Service, archive series ADM 337 for RNVR.) Garland was appearing on the Jutland Interactive Map of the NMRN, but is not presently there.

I stand corrected. That makes more sense!

Yep, from Ancestry.

You say you have full access, so shouldn't be a problem to find.

Either search by name, now you know the recipient, or browse the records.

Military/awards & decorations/uk, naval medal and aware rolls, then you'll see a "browse this collection" box.

Select ww1 medals/category: silver war badge/issue now 30000-45000 or whatever the the numbers are.

From ADM-337-21-100    Thomas Garland joined the Clyde Division of the RNVR in Glasgow in 1910 and was advanced to Leading Seaman on 6 June 1913.   Passed Educational Test for ERA on 4 Aug 1914 and rated ERA2 in ?? August 1914.  Otherwise, it is likely he would have followed many of his comrades into the Royal Naval Division and Antwerp, Gallipoli and France.  He was drafted first (briefly) to HMS Cyclops, then the cruiser HMS Drake until refit, then Victory II before joined HMS Caroline.  He returned to      Victory II after Caroline and remained there until invalided in 1919.
