Dazscuba Posted 8 May , 2022 Share Posted 8 May , 2022 (edited) Looking through a neighbours WW1 and 2 family members medals, service records and souvenirs and found the below. They think it was owned by their G Grandfather in WW1. It looks like Queen Victoria’s era and has her details on it and on the rear the National Anthem God Save The Queen. any ideas please? Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 8 May , 2022 Share Posted 8 May , 2022 From the latest date, 1887, it looks like a memento to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee.
FROGSMILE Posted 8 May , 2022 Share Posted 8 May , 2022 (edited) As Dai says, it has the look of Jubilee Medal for Queen Victoria, but in this case of commercial rather than official type. These often had a red white and blue ribbon fitted through the slot and were sometimes ordered by commercial concerns for their employees as a gesture of loyalty and celebration. They were not of very high quality but were crisply stamped and when new and shiny with a bright ribbon looked suitably impressive for the wearer to pin on clothing for the celebrations. NB. Notice the Registered Design serial numbers embossed on the top of the ribbon slot. Most of these would have been made in Birmingham and London, where were centred the rival jewellery and insignia centres of commerce, one North and one South. There was a similar but much smaller industry in Edinburgh. Edited 8 May , 2022 by FROGSMILE

A reflection perhaps of a Britain that actually makes very little, but that also dresses very differently. I have a small collection of Jubilee, Coronation and royal visit 'medals' with the aforementioned red white and blue ribbons, issued by the City of Winchester (pre 1935). They have the city crest and most have the name of the Mayor of the day, the latter being a vanity project, I feel. In 1977 we were all given a 25p Crown which has doubled in price today! These days it's the £5 Coin to commemorate such events, which you can purchase from the Royal Mint for £10 or more. Yes, it’s truly a reflection of how so much has changed, in particular in the manufacturing sector, but also in attitudes to dress, e.g. there aren’t very many lapels in daily wear to pin things on.
