LChapman Posted 5 May , 2022 Share Posted 5 May , 2022 For anyone who has knowledge of the Lovat Scouts: I'm researching someone who joined up in December 1915 and was a Private in the 2/2 Lovat Scouts, until discharged beginning of March 1916. Is there any particular reason that someone would be placed in this battalion? Could they choose it? Were there desired physical characteristics or skills? This soldier was from Glasgow, and according to the 1911 census was a railway ticket checker. This doesn't seem to fit with what I've read about Lovat Scouts being Highlanders/estate workers and such. Additional questions: I know the 2/2 were a home unit, but what exactly might they have done? Where were they stationed?
tullybrone Posted 5 May , 2022 Share Posted 5 May , 2022 (edited) Hi, You may find some answers in GWF sister site LLT re 1st & 2nd Lovat Scouts via this link - http://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/army/regiments-and-corps/the-british-yeomanry-regiments-of-1914-1918/ and re 10th QOCH here - http://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/army/regiments-and-corps/the-british-infantry-regiments-of-1914-1918/queens-own-cameron-highlanders/ Your man might have volunteered in December 1915 - prior to the Derby Scheme - and was able to enlist in his regiment of choice. If you provide a name you may get a better response. Steve Edited 5 May , 2022 by tullybrone
LChapman Posted 5 May , 2022 Author Share Posted 5 May , 2022 Hi, thanks, LLT really only says that they were a home battalion and stationed in Norfolk around December 1915. I had already started a topic on the specific soldier a while back - his name was John Allan, service number 6314. I'm just now returning to my research on him and looking for general contextual information about the 2/2.
