Hello!

I think I'm going ludicrously mad, but I've gone off and got photos online of A B C D E F Company of the 10th Battalion, AIF.. and I've set to identify a portion of them... Only 10 all together have been positive and probables, I might share the document if someone wants to see it.

Good luck, as my pm to you. Grandfather lived in a small village, there is a picture of 10 or 12 soldiers on the village green around 1914 or 15. I doubt there is any one still alive who could identify any one of them. Problem is, a camera was a novelty in those days, not many had them so those men are largely nameless.

Yeah, I wish cameras were more popular. I also have found out information about one of my relatives in the First War, so back to researching!

The 'G' Coy photo, you list -

234 George Francis Henderson, Colonel-Sergeant Second row, fourth from left

it should be 'Colour-Sergeant'

Yeah, it was late at night.. my bad! I knew it was wrong, my mind processed Col. Sergeant as Colonel Sergeant.. thanks for advising me!

edit: I guessed it by the way.. he’s got a patch above his stripes so it’s my best guess.. his ribbons denote a few ribbons, and he states (I recall) 8 years in the Welsh Regiment (24th Foot rather)..

The insignia on Henderson's arm is that of the Colour-Sergeant (Crown and 3 Chevrons).

Each company had a Colour-Sergeant, 'D' (133 H Coward) and 'G' (234 GF Henderson), so when their companies were amalgamated the senior Col-Sgt was made a CSM (Henderson) and a more junior Col-Sgt was made CQMS. In the case of Coward, he must have been more senior to other Col-Sgts within the Battalion and was made CSM of 'A' Coy. One of the other Col-Sgts (more junior to both Coward and Henderson) from one of the other companies would have transferred into 'D' Coy (new establishment) as the CQMS.

[Edit: when I say senior and junior, maybe I should say 'experienced' and 'less experienced']

Less experienced eh?

He has the ribbons for service, served in a few places prior to enlistment, yet he is junior...? Then again, it depends on the other Colour Sergeant.

Thanks for that information, very nice...

What is a Quartermaster Sergeant..? I assume as the name implies, a Quartermaster ranked sergeant.. but I'd like a second opinion!

Neither Coward nor Henderson were less experienced, that's why they both became CSMs!

The CQMS was in charge of supplies for the company and was the second most senior NCO within the company

Very interesting photos. There are some very young looking boys there - esp 20th Reinf of the 10th (lower left).

PS why is this thread in Skindles?

I just felt like putting this here, rather asking the 'Old hens' of the GWF. I'm still young and sometimes seek opinion from others.
I do know that it would probably make no difference if it goes in 'Soldiers and their units', but I just felt like putting it here.

I'm going to start the 21st Reinforcements now!
The boy front row, far left looks around 20 or so in my opinion.. [That's if he's second row, second from left] though I am born in a generation who haven't seen black and white much.

Yeah and why not though you'd get a wider readership in Soldiers. Sorry! I meant THEIR left the men on the right when looking at the photo!
