It’s a very fine looking badge (a firm striking) and I certainly think it’s genuine and not a modern copy.  The badge design stayed constant for both world wars though so there isn’t really anything to date it.

Thank you for the reply, Frogsmile

Glad to help.  Notice that there was a variant with voiding behind the cat from 1908 onward, which fits with your badge.

I’m glad to help.  Here is the badge in use during WW1.  Two types of headdress, the glengarry cap with its unique three rows of white dicing (other Scottish regiments two) and the ‘drab’ (meaning brownish shade) khaki Tam-o-Shanter bonnet issued as fairly ubiquitous Scottish field dress from 1916 onward.

Was the glengarry still issued for dress and replaced as a field cap with the Tam?

Yes, it was the principal cap used by A&SH initially, as per the photos above, but it wasn’t very practical in trenches and men tended to use “cap comforters” (knitted wool) worn like beanies, or balaclavas rolled up and worn in a similar manner.  Glengarries were still worn when out on rest / reserve, but after 1916 the ToS became fairly ubiquitous, alongside the Brodie steel helmet.

Fantastic Michel!  The A&SH fought through the battle in glengarries and your badge looks like it was pierced with fragmentation.  It’s very evocative.

It is believed by some, including John Gaylor in his book on Military Badge Collecting, that the "tail up" or "tail down" on the cat is a dating detail.  Earlier badges had tail up with the changeover occurring around 1908.

So a badge from the time of the 2nd Anglo/Boer War 1899-1902 might have his tail up, in addition to voiding on just the one side.  As your badge is sat very firmly on his tail AEF1918, you can rest in the assurance that your badge dates from after 1908, and thus as mentioned earlier it’s not possible to determine which world war (or between) that it might have been used in.
Good luck with your collecting it can become quite addictive.
