sunflower Posted 27 April , 2022 Share Posted 27 April , 2022 From CWGC - 'Today we are launching a trial CWGC biodegradable wreath in our information centre in Ieper as a sustainable and environmentally friendly option to our visitors. It comes with a biodegradable note card so that visitors can write their personal message when laying the wreath at the graves and memorial panels of their loved ones. The wreath was carefully and respectfully handmade in the former Ypres Salient from woven fresh willow that grow on the former battlefields. Willow was often used during the First World War to strengthen the walls of the trenches. Soft willow catkins provide a touch of white that will never fade, symbolising our commitment to never forget the lives which were lost during the World Wars. A single red flower provides the finishing touch, a colourful glint amongst the headstones. Those who buy the wreath also contribute to our Commonwealth War Graves Foundation, enabling us to fund new education activities that engage people from all communities with the history of the World Wars. It will help to tell the inspiring stories of the men and women who died, ensuring they will never be forgotten.' Thoughts?

Steven Broomfield Posted 27 April , 2022 Share Posted 27 April , 2022 Splendid idea: nothing more depressing than old wreaths mouldering away; not to mention the waste created when they're finally removed. While we're at it, maybe visitors could stop putting laminated pictures of loved ones on headstones, too.
Mark Hone Posted 5 August , 2022 Share Posted 5 August , 2022 Perhaps this will encourage the RBL to look at using alternative materials in their artificial poppy wreaths and sprays.

Mark Hone Posted 19 April , 2023 Share Posted 19 April , 2023 Pleased to learn about this latest development. I used some of the biodegradable wreaths on my last School Battlefields Tour in October.
