This distinctive concrete column or pillar is near Aveluy. It is on the Tank Driving School to the south east of the village.

Has anyone any ideas as to what it could be ?

Interesting - I thought that the Tank Driving School was west of the village beyond the Level crossing

Delta

It is the Old Chalk Pit shown on your map to the east of Aveluy.

Nothing like what you depict, much larger, note the cut outs.

Trevor Pidgeon belies the old calk pit was used by No 1 Section of C Company in 1916 but I am unconvinced it was the site of the Tank Driving  School late 1917

Bob, I didn't mean it is the same, just an example: factory-made reinforced concrete gate posts are all pretty similar, with varying fixtures.

More likely agricultural or industrial than military.

Please be convinced, it is the place. Lots of IWM photos such as Q 9891/2 I have not looked it up but it is my list + others.
