This is actually a link at the top of page 14 that connects to another post with a cropped list. The list number has been cropped off. Just found another copy that gives list number as 4632.

With many thanks to all of the forum members who are adding to the Casualty Lists on the Casualty Lists thread, please find here a new version of the index with all of the additional lists which have been published on that thread since 21 May.  There are now 5410 entries on the index.

This version includes three lists where I have corrected the number due to earlier typos:

List number

1060      Corrected list number (from HA.32193 to HA.32913)

1061      Corrected list number (from HA.32198 to HA.32918)

2950      Corrected list number (from P.41475 to P.41476)

and three lists were removed from the index due to being duplicates:

2870      (a duplicate of 615)

2940      (a duplicate of 523), and

3417      (a duplicate of 2872).

David, I've checked through my version as I made some edits along the way which explains why mine has some additional entries. That's not to suggest these are errors.

However, in working though things yesterday I think there is a duplicated list. You may want to check through the following rather than just accept what I'm saying.

Entries 5079-5084 are from one image on page 66 with multiple lists, but it doesn't seem complete to me. I've added 3 extra rows as 5084.1 etc.

Then I've seen that the same image appears on page 89 but now with the full compliment of lists, entries 8317-8325.

I'll attach the image on pages 66 & 89 just for reference.

I think the dates are very odd on this list, it seems to be headed May 16th 1915 but references lists from April - 15th June 1915. I've wondered if it should be headed June 16th 1915.

Page66_014.jpg.2227c060ed15eddc83412dcd1b98e3ba.jpg

Extracts from the spreadsheet for the above.

David1.jpg.221c78a4f0568bf0140996446c95ff52.jpg

David2.jpg.c438d7c358d7097bb5952f5931e9b558.jpg

I think the easiest option would be to delete the rows for 5079-5084? NB. #5082 describes C494 but #8320 describes C949, I know this typo is mentioned in the comments but I think #8320 would be better as 494?

Depending on any response my intention would be to delete 5079-5084.3 on my version.

Given the current events on the main topic I'm wondering how many further updates to the spreadsheet were intended?

Another image where I've added extra rows. It is a complicated list and again I've attached it for reference.

Not suggesting there's an error as such just explains why my version has extra rows. I wondered if the 16th Sept is correct but the 115 lists are the RFA/RHA's way of keeping a tally of corrections to the original lists.

Page69_088.jpg.eb97cf58d70cffc959dca9b8f095426e.jpg

The spreadsheet has it as:

David3.jpg.fbdd6dbded9a12b3c663a4ac06917169.jpg

I added 5377.1 - 5377.5 to cover the 115/246, 247, 248, 249 & 250 sub lists.

Lastly,

Page 69.

#5317 is undated at present. I found WO363 files for Pook & Steele that show they were wounded 20th Sept 1914.

Hi TEW,

Thank you so much for those three very helpful comments.

Regarding 5079-5084: I agree that there are a number of duplicates in the index which is not helpful.  One of the projects I set myself shortly after publishing the last version of the index was to go through more thoroughly trying to find these and deleting them, as well as trying to be more consistent about the comments.  So far I have found 51 duplicated lists and these do include 5079-5084 which, as you say, are duplicated later on where I did a better job of indexing all of the lists the sheet contained.  The next version of the index will therefore not include 5079-5084 and the entries for 8317-8325 now have the following comments:

image.png.919d760902b35b665f5c165add649dd2.png

How does that look to you?  Are there further improvements we could make?

Regarding 5377, I agree that this could be broken out.  I don't think I did so originally because there were no WO Casualty List numbers to show definitively that the separate sections (each with the RHA/RFA Records Office 115/ file reference) come from different casualty lists but that does lok to me as being very likely to be the case, so I would be very happy to break these out into separate entries if that is helpful?

And regarding 5317: thank for that extra information.  My suggestion would be to add that as a comment if that sounds good to you?

Finally in terms of the index, there will be at least a couple of additional versions; firstly, I want to complete the quality control project I have been doing and publish a better version of the index based on the lists published on the now locked thread, so your very helpful comments will go to further improving that.  But also, as you know, we know of the existence of a few thousand lists on a variety of sites which were not published on the locked thread.  We are working on adding those to the index with some brief signposting as to on which site they may be found in case that information, and a more complete index, are useful to forum members.

David,

All looks good to me and I'm only putting forward suggested edits. Far be it for me to start interfering!

Wasn't aware of the duplicate situation although I do spot some occasionally. There's also the rarer situation where what appears to be a duplicate is a better copy.

Quite a few of the 'lists' on pages 1-10 are transcriptions, I've managed to source the original images for some of those transcriptions. Others elude me as I assume they come from the non-searchable Ancestry set. I've also managed to track down better versions of some of the early images as they were so low resolution. There remain some that are almost illegible.

I've slowly been working through my set of images which means straightening, cropping, resizing, converting to greyscale and re-naming each image. The plan was to arrange them chronologically by theatre. It's a slow process and with the upload frequency I'm always dropping behind.

Incidentally, when a greyscale image is uploaded the Amazon attachment thing converts it to 24 bit colour and changes the file name from EG. HA3977_2.jpg to HA3977_2.jpg.7bf17b2873bfb80cd7af6840f2255ee0.jpg. I think it's very odd to have two file extensions in a filename, The image file sizes are unnecessarily large (being 24 Bit Colour) and the gobbledegook file names can run to quite a length.

I found my long lost 1916 RE index of Other Ranks Names recently and I have been going through Dink's Newfoundland Casualty Lists to see if there are any 1916 RE Lists so that I can include the names on my index. I think it is worth noting on your index that the three parts of HA 3839 (that I posted on p 41 and referred to on p 51 - not Newfoundland lists) have only been partially indexed by FMP. The page with the RE names on are still not indexed on FMP.

Brian,

Thank you, that is interesting.  I know Ancestry much better than FMP and find their indexing pretty sketchy sometimes, but given that these companies are having to deal with records in a large variety of formats, some handwritten and many badly damaged, I guess that I shouldn't really be overly surprised.

All,

here is the latest version of the index.

As you will have seen from @dink999's post on the Casualty Lists thread the index now includes 2,145 new lists which are on the ICRC site (https://grandeguerre.icrc.orgbut which have not been posted onto this forum.  These are in addition to the new posts made by forum members since the thread was unlocked so there are now 11,172 entries on the index.

In addition, there have been quite a few changes made to the index since the last version I posted in March.  Most of these come from some housekeeping I have been doing which has included some improvements to some of the comments (making them more standardised and also adding in additional comments) but it has also resulted in a large number of duplicated images being identified, so as a result I have made the following changes:
