Dee Morehouse Posted 16 February , 2022 Share Posted 16 February , 2022 I have an SMLE MKIII sword bayonet and need help with the markings. On the left ricasso has the crown some worn markings below, and 1907 below that. There are no other markings on that side. On the spine there is a single 4, and what appears to be a worn G or C. On the right ricasso there is the British government acceptance mark, then below that is a faded C and immediately below that is a single 8. Below is the bend mark and on each side are the Enfield inspection marks. I need help identifying what the 4 on the spine and the C and 8 on the right ricasso; I haven't been able to find what these three markings mean. trajan Posted 9 March , 2022 Share Posted 9 March , 2022 The photographs are not too clear but I suspect the 'C' and the '8' are remains of an inspectors mark, while the '4' is one of those 'production' marks often found on tangs, numbers and letters, for which there is no official explanation!
