tankengine888 Posted 9 February , 2022 Share Posted 9 February , 2022 Hello! im interested in both young and old soldiers, especially old. I’m looking for the real life “Jack” Jones (from dads army), who served from 1885 to 1916, then the Home Guard. I seem to have found one that is interesting, Charles Key, 1st AIF Remount who served in the Zulu War, (Second)Boer war and so on. But I want to find the oldest of the old soldiers who served in the army or any branch previously! any responses are appreciated!
keithmroberts Posted 9 February , 2022 Share Posted 9 February , 2022 I suspect that in the terms that you set out, you have no chance. Many older ex servicemen returned to the colours, and served in UK barracks for part or all of the war, and by nature of their work and location, received no medal entitlement. They still did their duty, and sometimes more. Much the same applied to former RN personnel. Few who actually survived the war will have surviving service records. In addition many pension records were weeded and disposed of where no claim had been made.

I think Charles Key of the AIF still beats him, as Charles did go overseas.

AOK4 Posted 21 February , 2022 Share Posted 21 February , 2022 Professor Caspar rené Gregory, born 1846, was an American German and volunteered at the age of 67 (he is considered to be the oldest German war volunteer). He was KIA on 9 April 1917 (artillery bombardment on Neufchâtel-sur-Aisne). He had served some time at the front, but had been appointed Gräberverwaltungsoffizier in October 1916. A lot of these soldiers who stayed on in South Africa after the Boer War and mention Zulu War are referring to the Zulu Rebellion in 1906. Scott So that means only DePassy was in the Zulu War aswell as Charles Key.. but Steve listed him as Sudan 1885 when he had served in Zulu Wars. But that sounds about right anyways, thanks! Guest Posted 25 May , 2022 Share Posted 25 May , 2022 Mate, (Jones) Sorry I can't find my source for the Zulu war (1879), is its to long ago but I had been told he served with the 2Bn 24th Foot, with a Regt number? He does claim Zulu war as part of his service but there's the problem He mentions service in the Imperial LH, in Boer war, while documents show he service in the SAC with a Regt number in the Boer War? A number of Aussies did see service in the Imperial LH in the Natal Rebellion (1906), but I could find no record of any service. If you can find that then please let us know? As to the Record of Charles Key? Where does he claim service in the Zulu War 1879? Records do show he served in the Sudan 1885 - Boer War 1900-01 and Natal 1906 He claims to be 49/50 years old? So are we now saying he served in the Zulu war of 1879? S.B

Guest Posted 25 May , 2022 Share Posted 25 May , 2022 Mate, Possibly, but as mentioned by Scott, the Natal Rebellion of 1906 was often called the Zulu war Around 1900, Aussies got caught in a number of wars going on around the world 2nd Sudan, Matabele war, China rebellion, Boer wars (1 and 2), just to name a few. We had just fought in the last New Zealand war before all this. So our part of the globe was going. S.B

S.B Well I suppose yes, Zulu War 'Natal Rebellion'https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natal_Native_Rebellion_Medal It had a clasp, so that accounts for that. I don't have photos of him unfortunately [none on ancestry or VWMA] but he was of serving age in 1879.. but born in NZ TTFN.
