stuart rowles Posted 3 February , 2022 Share Posted 3 February , 2022 Attached is a WW2 man who served at HMS Pembroke and HMS Badger. He had previously served in WW1 as a stoker. Can anyone tell me what colour the uniform is, why the hat is dark and what the letters are on the hat. I am hoping to get is coloured and need to know the exact colours. Thank you. RNCVR Posted 3 February , 2022 Share Posted 3 February , 2022 2 WW RN navy blue uniform, H.M.S. cap ribbon worn during wartime. His rate badge on right arm is Stoker 1st class. & he has 2 Good Conduct chevrons on his left sleeve, His rank would be AB (Able Seaman).
Lawryleslie Posted 3 February , 2022 Share Posted 3 February , 2022 What is a bit strange is the white braiding on the collar around the neckline.

It used to be worn in home waters in "summer months" only and in places like the tropics and the Mediterranean all year. I think that it was not supposed to be worn at all in home waters in WW2. I believe that when Mountbatten was First Sea Lord. He managed to introduce the permanent wearing of the white topped cap. RM

I think its a white scarf he is wearing, he has it tucked partially under his collar.

As he is wearing a stoker's badge he is a stoker, he can't also be an AB which is a different branch. RNCVR Posted 4 February , 2022 Share Posted 4 February , 2022 Correct, I was not thinking correctly & should have corrected that, He would be a Stoker 1st class.
stuart rowles Posted 5 February , 2022 Author Share Posted 5 February , 2022 Thank you everyone. Is that a small badge on his lower right arm or is it a blemish on the photograph.
RNCVR Posted 5 February , 2022 Share Posted 5 February , 2022 I looked at that also, enlarged that section, it appears to be a spot or blemish on the print, possibly as the negative was not cleaned prior to printing.

stuart rowles Posted 5 February , 2022 Author Share Posted 5 February , 2022 Thanks for the colour pictures. Can I take it that the stoker badge and the good conduct stripes would be in red?
RNCVR Posted 5 February , 2022 Share Posted 5 February , 2022 Yes, everyday wear uniform badges were in red embroidery. Number 1 dress uniform badges were in gold wire.

As RNCVR already stated, No.1 (best) uniform for ratings was the same, apart from the fact that the badges were gold, not red. MB

Same uniform, but gold rank & rate badges worn, if a special occasion such as an Admiral’s inspection of the ship, medals would also be worn. wallace2 Posted 8 February , 2022 Share Posted 8 February , 2022 What colour might the medal ribbons be? If he served in WW1?
RNCVR Posted 8 February , 2022 Share Posted 8 February , 2022 (edited) Left to Right - 1914-15 star, British War, & Victory medals. To qualify for the 1914-15 star he had to have active service in a theatre of war that qualified for the star. ie: France, Belgium, Mediterranean theatre, on the high seas. Qualification for the star ended Dec 31, 1915. If he only had active service during 1916-19 then he would have qualified for the BWM & VM pair. In some cases the BWM could be awarded as a single medal. Edited 8 February , 2022 by RNCVR
wallace2 Posted 9 February , 2022 Share Posted 9 February , 2022 RNCVR, Thank you for posting the potential medal ribbon colours for the colourisation.
RNCVR Posted 9 February , 2022 Share Posted 9 February , 2022 Its difficult now to obtain original 1WW silk weave medal ribbon but if you are planning on making up his ribbons you might be able to acquire some on ebay in UK. There is also lots of copy/reproduction ribbon but the quality ranges from fair to terrible & its usually nylon or some kind of polyester ribbon.
