Amber3110 Posted 31 January , 2022 Share Posted 31 January , 2022 I'm not sure if I am in the right place. Apologies if not. I was hoping somebody might be able to help me to find a photograph of an individual soldier or his Battalion. His name was Evan Henry Evans (1893-1916) (Private no: 25615) of the 17th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He was killed at Mametz Wood in July 1916, and I am currently researching him for his surviving family members. I'd be immensely grateful for any assistance. clive_hughes Posted 31 January , 2022 Share Posted 31 January , 2022 You might also ask on the Royal Welch Forum. For the WW1 centenary years 1914-21 they have gathered images of 25 per cent of all the regiment's fatalities, in a special sub-section of the website; the list is organised by date of death. So you have a one in four chance of locating an image there. I'd have a look myself for you but I can't seem to log in tonight. Clive

As this man was killed on 12th July, the report in a newspaper is about right for date when newspaper report and casualty list appeared. For those who are keen, the Welsh text about him below: Not him. The man in the photo can be shown to be Pte 40342 Evan Evans 1st RWF Killed in Action 26 8 1916. His address is in Caernarfon which is some distance from Bagillt where the thread subject was from.

chaz Posted 1 February , 2022 Share Posted 1 February , 2022 (edited) 16 hours ago, ALAN MCMAHON said: I am a little puzzled as I cannot find a Private Evan Evans, 1RWF on CWGC on either name, date of death or service number. Is there a reason for this? Answering my own question- Yes, he is there- but not if searched for on service number alone, nor if the input query is E. Evans"- Ah, the joys of databases. yes, the answer is its there to confuse us, much like supermarkets re arranging shelves. you get used to one way then they change it, usually set up by a sadist. I spend ages looking for names, known but indexed as initials or vice versa. the other problem is, they are often recorded on their final service number and regiment, some medals are issued under the initial joining number and regiment. Often is the case that you have to check an MIC from Ancestry first to see if any options. Have you tried looking for an alternative site? http://www.hut-six.co.uk/cgi-bin/search1421.php Edited 1 February , 2022 by chaz
chaz Posted 2 February , 2022 Share Posted 2 February , 2022 there have been discussions on this forum regarding CWGC's search engine and also its performance after the recent upgrades , by techies who are unfamilier with the needs. Geoff's search engine has been often quoted as a better way to search. I think it dissapeared a few years ago but its back.
