I came across this grave in Ryhope Cemetery, south of Sunderland. He was aged 40 years at death, which is confirmed by the General Register Office. Any information on him out there?

He has surviving service papers which show that he was born in Ipswich, (although the census appears to indicate that his family had moved to Sunderland in the first few years of his life), and joined the East Surrey regiment in Sunderland in November 1914, aged 28.  He was transferred to the MGC via the RGA, and went abroad 6/8/1916. He was gassed 1/5/1918 as 43938 MGC. He was discharged Class P 30/10/1918 to return to coal mining, and appears to have been subsequently discharged 14/12/1918 Para 392 x vi (a), and issued an SWB.

Address on discharge was 8 Nicholson Street, Ryhope. He and Dorothy had four children.

Thank you, all three of you. Yes, I see now that he was born in Ipswich, second quarter of 1886.
