I am looking to find out more information on William Meakin a private in the 38th South Staffs Regiment, He was sent to South Africa Feb 1900.

His parents were Job & Mary Ann Meakin there address at the time was 6 Railway Row Monmore Green Wolverhampton. I would be interested to know if he survived the Boer War .

Shazlou, welcome.

To keep within the ww1 remit of this forum we need to see if he survived to serve in ww1!

Interestingly there is a WW1 service record for a William Meakin of Wolverhampton who says he had previous 5 years service with the South Staffs.

He was born c 1880 St Mathews, Wolverhampton and married Mary Agnes Robinson in 1903. Thereafter address Ellesmere port, I think. Could this be the same man?

Charlie

Edit. 1901 census Job Meakin and family (William is absent) live in parish of St Mathews so looks like a good candidate.

Hi @shazlou456 and welcome to the forum.

Just to add that the 38th (South Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot, became the South Staffordshire Regiment as part of the 1881 Army reforms. Regimental tradition probably led to it still being referred to as the 38th at various times, but that wasn't officially how it was known by the time the 1st Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment sailed for South Africa in March 1900. There is a little bit more here on a forum about the Anglo-Boer War - https://www.angloboerwar.com/unit-information/imperial-units/665-south-staffordshire-regiment

The site shows that a W. Meakin of the 1st Battalion appears on the medal rolls for the Queens South Africa and Kings South Africa Medal.

Cheers,
Peter

There is a family tree for William Meakin, the soldier of 1914, on ancestry. It shows his son Joseph who was born 1906 as per army record.

But I think they have made an error re 1901 census. I think he was in South Africa not in Haxted! Worth contacting tree owner.

I can't work out link but William Meakin 1882-1929 in a Ward family tree.

Shazlou, I am happy to pass on the request but you could probably take up a 2 week free trial with ancestry and do the same, if you want.

I will pm the tree owner and keep you updated.
