My casualty is another mystery man, died with the KLR CWGC

Pte William Hemming #23664 - SDGW says born Leamington, residence Aughton,Lancs

S/E to father John H.

Is the newspaper telling me he enlisted with Herefords ?

From BNA

Haven't found a Pension Record to ease things

The only fitting man I can find is William Bernard Hemming b.1893 Leamington and Warwick

No trace of his residence up my way in Aughton, nr Ormskirk

thanks

Dave

I think it's just a large heading for the first regiment and then smaller ones for the others.

Agreed. The original Times list shows this correctly

Just the typesetter having a mare:)

Bear in mind that it is the next of kin that was then at Leamington Spa. Given that the father got his pay and War Gratuity according to Soldiers Effects, it's most likely he was the nominated next of kin, but that is not set in stone.

Having said which there is a candidate for the father John Hemming, recorded on the 1911 Census of England & Wales as a 46 year married Domestic Coachman, born Leamington and residence Leamington Spa - my access to images is down at the moment and the transcription I can see doesn't give a specific address. Amongst his children is a 17 year old William, a Butchers Assistant, born Leamington.

Cheers,
Peter

I note that on the Effects there is a sole legatee and his father only got o/s pay. The sole legatee is a Sarah Hunt,

This made me check for a will and..

https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/Wills?Surname=hemming&SurnameGrants=hemming&YearOfDeath=1917&YearOfDeathGrants=1917&MonthOfDeath=4&MonthOfDeathGrants=4&DayOfDeath=2&DayOfDeathGrants=2&AdvancedSearch=True&IsGrantSearch=False&IsCalendarSearch=False#soldiers

This may, if you are lucky, give some clues as to his identity

The will that I order a copy of is in fact a letter to Sarah that was accepted as a will. It seems because of the last but one sentence which says “don’t forget everything I have made is to you”. It is written just before he went off to France but is undated.
it is signed Will xxxxxx. So clearly they were involved. Perhaps a fiancée or common law wife.
No address.

That's brilliant Mark, many thanks

I had a feeling it was his lady friend, but I couldn't find any link to her around Aughton, Lancs (just outside Ormskirk)

There is nothing  there really apart from farmers fields
