Jen1959 Posted 11 January , 2022 Posted 11 January , 2022 This is my great grandparents family. I am looking to identify the uniform. The man’s name is Joseph Conlon born in Scotland between 1895/1900 . Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
6RRF Posted 11 January , 2022 Posted 11 January , 2022 Looks like Royal Artillery. There's a wheel on the cap-badge and the leather bandolier identifies him as a member of a mounted unit. He also looks to have a lanyard on the left shoulder
Jen1959 Posted 11 January , 2022 Author Posted 11 January , 2022 Hmm we are really unsure at this point. Would it be Canadian or British

Jen1959 Posted 11 January , 2022 Author Posted 11 January , 2022 Yes we know he was born in Scotland and moved to Canada not quite sure when. His parents names are Thomas Conlon and Elizabeth Greer. This photo was taken in Scotland as I know my grandmother moved to Canada in 1923
FROGSMILE Posted 11 January , 2022 Posted 11 January , 2022 (edited) It’s more likely to be British as the Canadians had their own special pattern of uniform** until they deployed to France and Flanders when to ease supply problems they were issued with British equipment and uniform. As he’s seemingly with his family I suspect that the photo was taken in Scotland before he deployed. If there’s no family history indicating him being a prewar regular soldier then he’s probably a part time citizen soldier of the Territorial Force. Where in Scotland was the family home? **The Canadian jacket had more buttons, closely spaced and an upright standing collar usually fitted with collar badges. Edited 11 January , 2022 by FROGSMILE
Jen1959 Posted 11 January , 2022 Author Posted 11 January , 2022 At some they were in Currie and Glasgow areas
IPT Posted 11 January , 2022 Posted 11 January , 2022 (edited) According to an Ancestry family tree, the three sons at the back should be Thomas Conlon (b1897), John Aloysius Conlon (b1898) and Joseph Alphonse Conlon (b,1900). That would presumably make Joseph the boy rear left. Edited 11 January , 2022 by IPT missed middle name
Jen1959 Posted 11 January , 2022 Author Posted 11 January , 2022 Ok now it’s completely confusing as we have two different birth years. One being 2895 and the other being 1900. Gets more confusing everyday

Jen1959 Posted 11 January , 2022 Author Posted 11 January , 2022 Sorry fat thumbs here. Birth years 1895 and 1900
