I had L.W.Arnells BWM for a while. Someone had tried to erase the naming on the rim. Thankfully didn't make a good job of it. Pte Leonard William Arnell L7007 1st East Kent Regiment Presumed dead 28/9/15 Date of entry 7/9/14 entitled to 1914 Star, Clasp & Roses BWM Victory Medal Date of death on CWGC 28.9.15 2nd East Kents Commemorated on the Loos Memorial (picture of his Name included) I visited there in April this year. Born St Pancras Lived Chichester enlisted Chichester He joined the Buffs between 10 and 16 October 1902 Originally in 1st Btn East kents, 16th Regiment, 6th division and at some point transferred to 2nd Btn East kents, 85th brigade, 28th Division He was killed 28/9/15 during the attack near Hohenzolleren redoubt during Loos offensive. Someone in the past has tried to erase his details from the rim, but fortunately they can still be made out. Arnell joined the Buffs at Chichester on 14/10/1902 aged 18 yrs 5 months. He was born at St Pancras, Chichester, Sussex. He was a brickmaker He stood just under 5ft 4ins and weighed 122lbs and was posted to the 2nd Bn. His daughter Nellie (born 1907) was living in a Franciscan Convent in Littlehampton under the guardianship of Mrs Dorothy May Drewitt of Drayton House in Chichester . She was to hold onto his medals until Nellie was old enough to appreciate their value. His Mother made a claim to the medals but was told by the war office that she was not entitled to them. He had 2 brothers Walter and Richard. Hi Leonard william arnell is my 2nd great granduncle i have his army records on my ancestry account . Have searched for any other info on him especially photos of his regiment or himself but no luck. Rachel

Allan1892 Posted 9 January , 2022 Posted 9 January , 2022 Had a quick look at newspapers on Find My Past -- can not find anything apart from two court mentions in 1910 and 1911 -- the 1910 shows name as Leonard Wm Arnell and the 1911 shows name as Leonard Arnell of 72 Victoria Road, Chichester. mandy hall Posted 9 January , 2022 Posted 9 January , 2022 Hi Rachel The local paper The Chichester Observer, never printed photographs of soldiers. I can’t see that they reported his death either. I have also replied to you on your other thread about Richard Leonard Arnell. My great grandparents and my grandad, were living round the corner from Victoria Road in St James Road Chichester in 1911. Mandy
