Remembered Today:

Butte de Polygone / Zonnebeke

Morning All, and a Very Happy Christmas.

I have been looking at maps of Polygon Wood, and particularly the Butte de Polygon (now has the 5th Australian Division memorial on it and overlooks Buttes New British Cemetery). The Butte is a striking feature and does not look like a natural one. It appears as a feature on trench maps so was there during the war. Does anybody know the origin of the mound and what it was for? I am just curious.

I understand it was a pre war rifle range.

The butte was the last place my grandad had a full complement of limbs. They attacked Broodseinde ridge the following morning, 4/10/17, where he was injured resulting in amputation of his leg.
