Rob Chester Posted 29 December , 2021 Share Posted 29 December , 2021 Morning All, and a Very Happy Christmas. I have been looking at maps of Polygon Wood, and particularly the Butte de Polygon (now has the 5th Australian Division memorial on it and overlooks Buttes New British Cemetery). The Butte is a striking feature and does not look like a natural one. It appears as a feature on trench maps so was there during the war. Does anybody know the origin of the mound and what it was for? I am just curious. Rob
mancpal Posted 29 December , 2021 Share Posted 29 December , 2021 I understand it was a pre war rifle range. Simon

Rob Chester Posted 29 December , 2021 Author Share Posted 29 December , 2021 Thanks very much. I thought it might have been an older archaeological monument. Thanks for the information. Rob
mancpal Posted 29 December , 2021 Share Posted 29 December , 2021 The butte was the last place my grandad had a full complement of limbs. They attacked Broodseinde ridge the following morning, 4/10/17, where he was injured resulting in amputation of his leg. Simon
