Not a lot to go on, can you get a better scan of the buttons, it could be Army Cyclist Corps.

Not sure whether @FROGSMILE and @CorporalPunishment can add any insights?

He’s a Coldstream Guard, Michelle. The regimental buttons are discernible and you can just make out the metal rose part of his shoulder title.

There is only a Grenadier Guard named William Cartwright on the MIC database 13855. Card shows a pair but the comments suggest that he was entitled to a 1914 Star and was issued clasp and roses for that.

An address in 1922 shown as Police in Tunstall Staffs,

Wow - many thanks Michelle, Frogsmile and Sotonmate.

Took some doing for a 14 year old!

Edit: Paul Nixon's website suggests the number 13855 was issued sometime in the early summer of 1908.

And MoD Held Files Index shows 2650896 was born 1/7/1900.

Looks a good candidate.

William Cartwright born 1/7/1900 is on the 1939 Register for Brierley Hill, with his wife Addie and daughter Edith (born 1924 ?)

Circle completed.

WFA/Fold3 pension card has a William CARTWRIGHT, 2036, Coldstream Guards - card also appears to show an alternative number 9897, North Staffordshire Regiment

Pensioned at 2/3 a day, April 1, 1920 until further notice

There is a date of 26.3.01 - think that is probably likely to be a discharge date = so very much a ??? and rather unlikely if dob is correct!! [And I now just note that @charlie962 seems to have found a much better candidate! - nice one!!!]

The William Cartwright I noted above married 1923 to Addie Billingham (reg Q1 Stourbridge) and died Christmas eve 1955.

Perhaps he enlisted to a D Reserve? As I said there is a record on FMP but it will not open on my PC.

Excellent work Charlie, it’s somehow pleasing to know that he survived the war and was able to marry subsequently.

If I had been able to access that it would have saved me time but it was a useful exercise.

I often have probs seeing the original document on FMP. I'm at the end of a rural copper wire line that is supporting many trees: and in another country. Hey-ho.

Well it’s certainly been splendid teamwork all told methinks.

Would Cartwright have been conscripted 1918. Nothing noted as prior service in that coldstream ledger. Would his work as steelworker have kept him back?

Just trying to remain 'in topic'

Not enlisting until 1923 I’m not surprised he survived ww1 :w00t:

the ledgers I’ve found are pretty good showing previous service  inc raf and navy

Yes it wasn’t really possible to tell from the photo, although looking at him again with the new information to hand, there is perhaps something post war about his hairstyle…🤔

I thought exactly the same about his hair
