Pte Alister McIntosh Wounded in France

Dingwall McIntosh

Recommended Posts

My Great Uncle, I have even less info on this one, he lost his knee cap, I have no unit or regimental number to work with. I have got say that he was in Dingwall, so I think Seaforth Highlanders again but unsure. Any info gratefully received.

Because of his kneecap injury there should be a pension record for him. But the Scottish Pension Records were not passed on to the WesternFrontAssociation (Correct me if I'm wrong) and thus are not available to the likes of me.

His wounding (assuming it was a wounding not an accident) should appear in the daily casualty lists, followed by his hometown/place of enlistment. Was he still living in Dingwall when war was declared? Local newspapers would be the best place to search.

On Western Front Assoc there is a brief pension card that mentions an Alistar McIntosh of the Seaforth Highlanders, no S/40259 and a second earlier number 1665. There is an associated Hospital Admission record but it says he was suffering from gunshot wounds to the rt chest. Another report says serious.

Neither of the above records give his age or origins.

There is a SilverWarBadge record showing enlistment Jan 1914 . Again no age given.

Alister McIntosh under its various spellings is not an uncommon name......

Charlie

Edit - that Hospital Admission say he was 7th Battalion.

Correction- the Roll says aged 22 when discharged 26/6/1919 so doesn't rule him out.

Charlie and Milner,

The wounds are not right for Alister, could be a spelling (Alaister) of his Forename and (Mackintosh)Surname. He was born Dingwall area and I have found that from the cencus of 1911.

I will keep searching

Do any of them have surviving service records that may just mention Alister's unit?

The census lists the family name spelt Mackintosh. So a search with this spelling brings up only one Alister A Mackintosh.

Medal card of MacKintosh, Alister A

From Souter's Roll of Honour.

1645 Private D Macintosh, slater, 4 Crawford Street, Dingwall.

1665 Private A Macintosh, baker, 4 Crawford Street, Dingwall.

Both would appear to be pre-war Territorials in B Company based in Dingwall.

The history of 4th Battalion by Haldane gives a very good overview of the Battalion.

The museum in Dingwall has many artefacts from the Battalion and is a mine of information.

I know. At the time they were classed as Serious so his recovery would have taken some time . he wasn't discharged until June 1919.

Superb- it is the man I detailed above.

Here are some near numbers just to make the point about TF enlistments Jan 1914;

1633 John MacLeod joined 4th Seaforth (TF)  10/1/14 aged 26 from Dingwall,Ross
1645 David McIntosh  (your other thread)
1652 Alex McKenzie joined 4th Seaforth (TF)  13/1/14 aged 23.1 from Ullapool,Ross
1657 Wm Forsyth joined 4th Seaforth (TF)  15/1/14 aged 18.5 from Cromarty
1665 Alister McIntosh  joined ............23/1/14  (aged presumably about 17- per my post above)
1669 Donald MacDonald joined 4th Seaforth (TF)  23/1/14 aged 29 from Ullapool,Ross

The older men generally had previous military service

He is in a Casualty List under his later 40259 number. Daily list 16/11/1917, listed as MacKintosh Dingwall.
