Guest obispos Posted 13 March , 2005 Share Posted 13 March , 2005 My grandfather, Charles Simpson, was in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in WW1 and his place of residence on his marriage certificate in Basingstoke, Hants in 1919, showed as Canadian Hospital, Sherborne St John, Hampshire. Does anyone have any knowledge of this hospital & how it was used during/after the war?
jhill Posted 13 March , 2005 Share Posted 13 March , 2005 Perhaps this refers to No. 4 Canadian General Hospital. From April 4, 1917 (on its return from Salonika) it was designated "Canadian Military Hospital, Basingstoke". There is a War Diary which you can peruse here . I am afraid there is not all that much information there, but at the end of each month there is short summary. It seems that this hospital did not specialize in one type of ailment, although the most "popular" injuries varied from time to time. Pending the return to Canada the last ward was closed by June 12, 1919 and the rear party left at the beginning of July.
