Information on Prisoner of War - served with Royal Irish Rifles and then Royal Dublin Fusiliers

Hi,

I am researching a James Whelan who served with Royal Irish Rifles Service No. 8794 then at some time after 25/10/1916 transferred to Royal Dublin Fusiliers.  He became a POW in German Hands - this must have been around 7/6/1918 when FWR note that he was listed as missing.  He was released as a POW from Germany and arrived in England 6/2/1919.  I have looked on National Archives WW1 war diary - and 8th Bttn Royal Dublin Fusiliers diary only goes up until October 1917.  They must have merged with 9th Battalion and I have looked at the 8/9th Royal Dublin Fusiliers but that only goes up until February 1918.  I am wondering if there are any further records for POW's that I could locate?  I cannot find his service records either - they must have been part of the burnt records - is there any other way I could find out when he transferred to RDF from RIF?  Appreciate any advice.

Many thanks

Ann

Captured unwounded 21st March 1918, note 2nd Bn, looks like he spent all his time at Cassel PoW Camp.

For comparison,

#43509 was allocated on transfer to the RDF on 14 Oct 1917
#43533 was allocated on transfer to the RDF on 14 Oct 1917

It appears there was a bulk transfer to 8/9 Bn from the Royal Irish Rifles on 14 Oct 1917.

As indicated by his ICRC record James was serving with the 2n Bn when captured  the 8/9 Bn having been  disbanded

Thanks so much to you all for taking the time to look all this up and advise me of this information - really very much appreciated.

Ann (and I've learned something else too - that there are records for POW's!).

Limited, but often helpful.

the lists took some time to collate, hence the June date.

Confusing the stamped Red Cross date of receipt/processing (29.Mai 1918 in this case) with date the list was despatched from the PoW camp is an error many people make. The list was actually despatched from Cassel on 29 April, the date can be found at the top of the list - in this case PA29949.
