kingsnorth36 Posted 17 October , 2021 Share Posted 17 October , 2021 Hi There I am researching W.N Baldwin RFC, warded the DCM and Meritorious Service Medal in September 1918. I am a little stuck on trying to work out where he was stationed, any help appreciated. Interestingly his papers also show he was in Russia in May 1917 until January 1918, I will need to look into this further. All help appreciated Regards Richard
charlie962 Posted 17 October , 2021 Share Posted 17 October , 2021 Frustrating that his pre 1/4/18 units are not given. I see the DCM citation: But no reference to unit. I did note his previous problems 1915 with financial matters and it is good to see that he came good in the field. Charlie
kingsnorth36 Posted 17 October , 2021 Author Share Posted 17 October , 2021 Indeed he literally went from a year in prison to serve gallantly for his country. As you say he came good in the end. The Russia service looks interesting.. Regards Richard
Airshipped Posted 18 October , 2021 Share Posted 18 October , 2021 Hi Richard, Just to eliminate the Irish service distractions from your enquiries, the training wings (Nos. 3 and 55) and indeed No. 11 (Irish) Group were only formed over the course of 1918. In that regard the ref to him at HQ Dublin and to Stores are likely to be correct given the disposition of the RAF at the time. June 1918 numbers, pre-TDS formation. No. 3 TW, Aug 1918. No. 11 (Irish) Group, Aug 1918.
charlie962 Posted 18 October , 2021 Share Posted 18 October , 2021 His Russian entry date of March 1917 looks remarkably like that of the RFC Mission sent that month. Could he have been a clerk with the mission? Charlie

kingsnorth36 Posted 20 October , 2021 Author Share Posted 20 October , 2021 The Irish postings are interesting and thanks for the clarification, saved me lots of brainwork. As stated pity that there is no clarity on his earlier service and it is therefore difficult to determine in which theatre of war he was serving when he was recommended for the DCM. Its highly likely that he was sent to Russia in March 1917 as a part of the small RFC mission to lend clerical / administrative support. The RFC trained 108 Russian aviators as part of its mission.
