About the box/chest.

Would this be a private purchase item and what would it have contained ? Did a serviceman have to achieve a certain rank before he could have his chest transported for him to his destination? Of course it may never have followed him round, could it have stored his belongings while he was away? I've seen similar things before but simply haven't really thought about the true purpose. I also wondered if the distance and length of posting of a regular (pre war India/Africa I was guessing) may have had in terms of taking personal possessions with them. I assume if it was an issued piece of equipment it would show a 'crows foot' somewhere and of course there would be plenty popping up (real or otherwise) on the internet.

Any chance of a few more photos? It looks in great condition.
