sapperwho Posted 16 October , 2021 Share Posted 16 October , 2021 I am pretty sure that the record of William Metcalf below is that of my Grandfathers eldest brother. Is it possible to find who his War Gratuity was paid to? Thanks in anticipation. John
horatio2 Posted 16 October , 2021 Share Posted 16 October , 2021 His three WW1 medals were claimed by and issued to his widow. I think it can be safely assumed that she received the War Gratuity.
RNCVR Posted 16 October , 2021 Share Posted 16 October , 2021 Was he killed as a result of HMS Vanguard explosion & loss, but that was approx 2320 on 9 July? No indication on his ADM188 showing him serving on board Vanguard. Unable to make out the name written beside last VictoryX entry, but does not appear to be Vanguard? KizmeRD Posted 16 October , 2021 Share Posted 16 October , 2021 HMS Ettrick - River Class destroyer. Had her bows blown off by a U-boat. MB
Lawryleslie Posted 16 October , 2021 Share Posted 16 October , 2021 He’s listed as a casualty on here……. https://astreetnearyou.org/regiment/10328/Royal-Navy,-HMS-Ettrick seems strange that a stamp "KILLED BY EXPLOSION" was used. I’ve seen "KILLED IN ACTION" stamp but not this one.

sapperwho Posted 16 October , 2021 Author Share Posted 16 October , 2021 Thanks Horatio I don't think anyone in our family knew he was married. It's only quite recently I found my grandfather and his two older brothers in the Work house in Newcastle. I was aware that his last ship was the Ettrick. Thank you all for your responses . They are all gratefully accepted. Cheers John
KizmeRD Posted 16 October , 2021 Share Posted 16 October , 2021 Here’s what the damage looked like to HMS Ettrick after the explosion (believed to be a torpedo) - did it also ignite fwd magazine? Total casualties 48, plus one who died later in Hospital from wounds received. MB
