I am pretty sure that the record of William Metcalf below is that of my Grandfathers eldest brother. Is it possible to find who his War Gratuity was paid to?

Thanks in anticipation.

Was he killed as a result of HMS Vanguard explosion & loss, but that was approx 2320 on 9 July?

No indication on his ADM188 showing him serving on board Vanguard.

Unable to make out the name written beside last VictoryX entry,  but does not appear to be Vanguard?

HMS Ettrick - River Class destroyer. Had her bows blown off by a U-boat.

Thanks Horatio I don't think anyone in our family knew he was married. It's only quite recently I found my grandfather and his two older brothers in the Work house in Newcastle. I was aware that his last ship was the Ettrick.

Thank you all for your responses . They are all gratefully accepted.

Cheers John

Here’s what the damage looked like to HMS Ettrick after the explosion (believed to be a torpedo) - did it also ignite fwd magazine?

Total casualties 48, plus one who died later in Hospital from wounds received.
