I have found this free site invaluable for searching WW1 addresses. Unfortunately it is closing permanently on 31/10/2021. I can get old maps of Bolton at the library but I used to use it a lot for other areas.

I've used to use old-maps.co.uk  quite a bit,  until I found https://maps.nls.uk/  This gives you georeferenced maps so you can directly compare places over time.  No street maps though

There's another site I found recently which is map-related although more specifically archeological.  I found it through a Smithsonian Magazine article  at https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/digging-into-englands-archaeological-past-with-online-mapping-180978851/?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=socialmedia&fbclid=IwAR3vSZY4e-8jl9UVqBEN-XVppLpPpyREzZQXJp-LDGRvhoWGnNyxB9AVd08

which links through to  Aerial Archaeology Mapping Explorer at https://historicengland.org.uk/research/results/aerial-archaeology-mapping-explorer/#727c4b97

Initially, it looks to be not too easy to use but with a little exploration of the site it does become easier and it can reveal some great information on WW1 archeological sites in England.  For example, I searched for the records of a WW1 training area near Ripon that I know to be there (I've walked through it a few times).  And it came up with the record:

Detailed Mapping

Historic Environment Record No: NONE GIVEN
Historic England Monument No: 1517597
Date: FIRST WORLD WAR
Interpretation: MILITARY CAMP
Seen as: EARTHWORK
Source: NMR RAF/540/1750 33 21-DEC-1955

Searching for Historic England Monument No: 1517597 through the link I found the details of the camp at https://www.heritagegateway.org.uk/Gateway/Results_Single.aspx?uid=1517597&resourceID=19191

Given the sheer number of WW1 training camps in the UK that have long since disappeared, I thought that it may be of use to a few on this site. Happy hunting!
