Hi Alison

Hope you get better from the Cov I had it last year not very pleasant :(

At the moment any suggestion is appreciated no matter how silly

My Grandad is a complete mystery As far as we are concerned he was a only child and when looking for the Army Records other thing came to light like a complete family of brothers and sisters .

It does not help both have the same names so confusion will be possible everyone family wise is dead so no leads there :(

I think I have all the easy online stuff but every time  I feel I cracked it  another mystery pops up.

At the moment I have started looking at other family trees linking to mine hoping someone may have pictures etc

It is a tough one.  I thought I had read a different wife’s name but can look again later. Yep covid is weird and unpleasant and changes daily so dnt know if I’m having a cough day, tired day, dizzy or what crazy stuff.

I had it Sept 2020 and it was horrible for around a week but after that I have had days of complete exhaustion plus weird head fluffs just seem not connected some times

Thanks for trying to help though  wish I had asked more questions when young

So was your Alfred married in 1923 to Rose Cale? If so the records mentioned above are for a different and tattooed man who married Elsie.  His signature on the documents relating to his heart is the same as the signature on the marriage bans in 1918. That would mean to me that a clerk confused documentation as it was possible they were in the same place at the same time.  The Alfred who married Elsie had a different address whereas your man seems to have stayed put.

Yes My Alfred married Rose Cale in 1923 but again the funny thing is on the Banns document it stated that both their parents were dead ? another lie

After a lot of looking I have found two things for the Mystery Man with Tattoos.

Wedding Cirt which states  occupation as Driver (Discharged Soldier )

And another doc asking for War Medals to be issued.

So now can we assume he is not My Grand Father  and as you said got the address mixed up .

Ok now that has been possibly cleared up how to find My Alfred's call up papers and war records

They must have some records of what where when ?

All I would like to clarify is did he serve in Mespot ??

Maybe a trip to Dorchester to the Dorset's museum and ask a few questions

Just to muddy the waters a little further, according to the GRO Indexes there were three Alfred James Jackman births registered in 1894. These are

JACKMAN, ALFRED  JAMES  Mother's maiden name: GARDNER

GRO Reference: 1894  M Quarter in STEPNEY  Volume 01C  Page 429

JACKMAN, ALFRED  JAMES  Mother's maiden name: BETTINSON

GRO Reference: 1894  S Quarter in LISKEARD  Volume 05C  Page 52

JACKMAN, ALFRED  JAMES  Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1894  D Quarter in PADDINGTON  Volume 01A  Page 44

I'm assuming the last of these is your great grandfather's birth. There was a fourth Alfred James Jackman birth registered in 1896, but given these are the only four Alfred James Jackman births registered between 1888 and 1900, it's an almighty coincidence that three of them were registered in the same year.

Edited to add that the first of these births can be eliminated as there is a burial record from Tower Hamlets for an Alfred James Jackman aged 15 months, who was buried on 19 February 1895. His age would put him as being born in late 1893, which would be consistent with a birth registration in the first quarter of 1894 in Stepney.

Searching the GRO Indexes for Jackman births, mother's maiden name Tarling, between 1878 and 1908 actually produces a lot of hits. Looking at where the births have been registered I think there are two distinct families, and it's not clear where the Marylebone birth registration fits in either, as there are also registrations in the same year in both Paddington and Edmonton.

Paddington birth registrations:

JACKMAN, THOMAS    Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1885  D Quarter in PADDINGTON  Volume 01A  Page 16

JACKMAN, MILDRED  ELIZABETH  Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1887  D Quarter in PADDINGTON  Volume 01A  Page 28

JACKMAN, MARTHA  LOUISE  Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1890  M Quarter in PADDINGTON  Volume 01A  Page 22

JACKMAN, ALFRED  JAMES  Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1894  D Quarter in PADDINGTON  Volume 01A  Page 44

JACKMAN, ROSE  ETHEL  Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1898  D Quarter in PADDINGTON  Volume 01A  Page 43

JACKMAN, JOHN  WILLIAM  Mother's maiden name: TARLIN

GRO Reference: 1902  D Quarter in PADDINGTON  Volume 01A  Page 4

JACKMAN, WILLIAM  SAMUEL  Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1908  J Quarter in PADDINGTON  Volume 01A  Page 48

Edmonton birth registrations:

JACKMAN, WILLIAM  GEORGE  Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1885  S Quarter in EDMONTON  Volume 03A  Page 360

JACKMAN, ANNIE  JANE  Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1887  S Quarter in EDMONTON  Volume 03A  Page 369

JACKMAN, WALTER  GEORGE  Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1889  J Quarter in EDMONTON  Volume 03A  Page 398

JACKMAN, ALFRED  JOHN  Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1891  M Quarter in EDMONTON  Volume 03A  Page 400

JACKMAN, JAMES  FREDERICK  Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1893  M Quarter in EDMONTON  Volume 03A  Page 428

JACKMAN, ALBERT  JOHN  Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1897  S Quarter in EDMONTON  Volume 03A  Page 402

JACKMAN, FREDERICK  JOHN  Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1895  J Quarter in EDMONTON  Volume 03A  Page 430

JACKMAN, ALBERT  ERNEST  Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1899  D Quarter in EDMONTON  Volume 03A  Page 397

JACKMAN, WINIFRED  GRACE  Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1902  M Quarter in EDMONTON  Volume 03A  Page 423

Marylebone birth registration:

JACKMAN, THOMAS    Mother's maiden name: TARLING

GRO Reference: 1887  J Quarter in MARYLEBONE  Volume 01A  Page 630

If we do have the right Alfred James Jackman, then he certainly wasn't an only child. According to the 1911 England census there had been seven children born in the marriage, six of who were still alive, so it looks as though the oldest son, Thomas, had died at some point.

The two Jackman/Tarling marriages in Paddington and Edmonton both took place in 1884, and there doesn't appear to be an obvious connection between the two sets of spouses as the fathers are all different.

Just to further muddy the waters.
Regarding the forearm tattoos. Immediately after it either says Lots or Dots.
if this man only had a couple of dots on his forearms then they most likely wouldn’t be visible on any photos, & as he aged they may not be noticeable as tattoos at all

Probably doesn’t help much 🙄

Did he definitely live at Braithwaite Place because the 1933 (I think) electoral roll has an Alfred and Elizabeth not Alfred and Rose.  I
Am confused as two trees on ancestry with different mothers. Both refer to Belsize Road. One is the Kensington birth mentioned above and mother Ellen.  The other is Elizabeth.

Hi Alison

Hope you are feeling a bit better :)

Now you can understand how confused I am getting because of the identical names and possibly birth year there is so much room for error .

One foot forward and three back :(

I think Rose’s father had died by 1923.
