If it's the first vacancy for 90 years some of the current team must be older than they look...

I think it means that they don't find (suitable) volunteers within their own organisation. Whether they will find the right person like this, remains to be seen.

Within a few days already 8 people have expressed an interest in becoming a Ceremonial Assistant! Impressive!

Quote

It is the first time in 90 years that the organizers of the Last Post are looking for reinforcements. The people of Ypres are looking for a Ceremonial Assistant. "That is a voluntary position in which you manage the ceremony under the Menin Gate" explains chairman Benoit Mottrie. In just a few days, 8 people applied. "And that's remarkable because that person gives up a lot of free time for us," adds Mottrie. "In any case, it is proof that the Last Post is still alive with people and that they are also still willing to do something for a good cause." The Last Post emphasizes that it will remain with 1 recruitment. The others are placed on a waiting list.
