Help wanted to identify Grandfather’s personal possession. Please !

Hello,

i am after some help please regarding the article in the attached photographs.

It belonged to my late Grandfather, Corporal 28271 Alfred Bloomfield of 2nd Durham Light Infantry (he also served in 22nd D.L.I. And 18th D.L.I.), and we believe that it may have emanated from his military service in WW1, although he never mentioned anything about it to any of his family, and we are only going off our intuition.

Towards the very end of his life my Grandfather gathered together a number of his personal possessions, (including this item) all of which had a direct and obvious link to his military service (such as his medals and a pocket watch and chain presented to him by his employer).

I would be very grateful for any help that could be given.

Many thanks,

Richard.

I agree, a pocket thermometer.

IMO If the clear cover is plastic, then it won't be contemporary.  If it is glass, it still might be a later date.

Thank you for the two prompt responses. I can confirm that the clear glass cover is made of glass (if this is of any assistance ?)
