Marilyn Jones Posted 28 September , 2021 Share Posted 28 September , 2021 The soldier sitting front left is named either W.M. Howard OR W. N. Howard OR W. R. Howard. Can anyone provide more information on him or the regiment. Is A.O.C. the same as R.A.O.C. (my Dad was in RAOC National Service in Egypt). Thank you. I think you meant to post a photograph but yes the Army Ordnance Corps was given the 'Royal' title in 1922 in recognition of its contribution to WW1

Howard. Leaves rather a lot of possibilities. Do you have any idea where he came from ? He wears a cap badge of the AOC and a qualified Fitter's arm badge(someone else to confirm correct term please). No-one in the photo wears any medal ribbons or other insignia so the photo is perhaps c 1915 rather than say 1918 ? No publisher or anything on reverse.

Charlie In the case of the AOC the crossed hammer and pincers badge was worn by an Armourer of the Armourers Section AOC, Charlie. The same badge was also worn by a variety of trades in the ASC, RA and RE. The man adjacent to him is a Wheeler. At least three of the men are wearing "Simplified" SD jackets. It was introduced in late 1914 and only manufactured into early 1915. Though it is was still being encountered/issued in dwindling numbers until the end of the war the presence of several together would certainly be more representative of c.1915/1916 than 1918. Yes, Charlie962 did mention that quite early in the thread Marilyn, there’s quite a bit of visual evidence to that effect.
