Thanks Ann & Raymond. Great to get a such result - thanks to the ebay listing we got a link to the 'Machine Gunner' account. Glad it's still in print!

Belinda,

With regard to a photo of him.  Have you asked any relatives if they have any old family albums tucked away anywhere?

An alternative is the local newspapers of the time.  I couldn’t find him in the digitised British Newspaper Archive but much has not been digitised.  If he had strong local connections in Glasgow it’s likely the award would have been in the paper, sometimes with a photo.  Also some roll of honour books produced locally by the newspapers had award recipients as well those that died.  All of this would entail some research and communication with the local reference library to first ID which paper then perhaps a visit to their reference library to look through.  It may be your best shot.
