Remembered Today:

Burridge W R Pte 323145 6 Bn London Regiment - later 2 Royal Dublin Fusiliers

Good evening, playmates.

As far as I can tell, Walter's docs are probably 'burnt'. He  was in the London Regiment and later moved to the RDF, losing his life near Epehy  21 Mar 1918.

Three questions. With that service number, is there any way of estimating when he might have joined up? Secondly, is there any way of establishing when he moved to the Fusiliers? Thirdly, I suppose it wasn't unusual for men to be shuffled around units to optimise unit strength?

The Appendix to February 1918 in The War Diary for 2 RDF shows that a number of ORs joined in that month.

The war gratuity tells us to within a month.

£9 10s war gratuity gives us 21 months service. So, enlistment in the month from 22 June 1916

It probably will help to have his RDF number = 43190 - Walter Rutland BURRIDGE

Walter Rutland BURRIDGE, 43190, Royal Dublin Fusiliers

Has a couple of Pension Index Cards at WFA/Fold3

Interestingly his widow, Louise Gertrude, got an Alternative Pension under Article 13 of the Royal Warrant

Instead of 13/9 for herself and 6/8 for her son, Bernard Walter, she got an AP of 28/11

This AP suggests that her husband had had a well paying job/high income before he joined up = Do you know what his earlier occupation was?

:-) M

Edit: Walter R Burridge (24) - The 1911 Census has him employed as a Furniture Salesman (Worker) [and his father as a Furniture Dealer (Retired)]

FMP have a couple of transcribed PoW enquiry records which say that he was with 'HQ' Company when he went missing.

@clkThanks. I really must learn to look at all sources such as FMP.although I wouldn'thave the first idea about equating another individual. My detective work is improving but clearly I have much to learn.

Thank you, everyone

Just so that you all know, this quest started after an acquaintance I've not spoken to in 5 years approached me. They had seen my (amateurish) efforts on FB and asked if I could find out something about a hitherto unknown relative (ol' Wally here). All he had was a photo of a memorial but from that I've been able to work out where it was,  put as much of his military history together as I can, and a rather limited family tree.

= Would be nice to know where it is [was?]

Meantime to avoid GWF members getting a serious crick in the neck I have rotate the image for you.
